The Wonders of the World: Part 2

Last week we explored some of the New Wonders of the World. From the Great Wall of China to the Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio De Janeiro, from Machu Picchu in Peru to the Chichen Itza in Mexico, these iconic sites are definitely ones you’ll want to add to your bucket list! This week’s post is featuring the rest of the icons on the list of New Wonders of the World and also one very special honorable mention!

The Roman Colosseum (Rome)

Starting off today’s list is the Roman Colosseum. One of Italy’s most famous structures, the Colosseum draws in millions of visitors every year. Teeming with culture and history, it is home to some of the most brutal and interesting entertainment in history. From gladiator contests, to animal hunts, to elaborate reenactments of famous battles of their time, the 50,000 spectators that were able to be seated there were witness to some of history’s most spectacular entertainment.

Taj Mahal (Agra, India)

This magnificent mausoleum was built to honor the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The name of this structure essentially means “crown of palaces” which is fitting due to the fact that there are twenty-eight different types of jewels set into the marble. During its creation, the chief architect Ustad Ahmad Lahauri actually constructed the surrounding towers to be tilted slightly away from the main building so in the event that they were damaged they would fall away from the Taj Mahal and protect the grave from being damaged.

Petra (Jordan)

Deep within Jordan’s desert canyons lies the stone city of Petra. Tombs, tunnels, and sacred monuments are hand carved into the sandstone cliffs. The outdoor Petra theatre can seat between 5,000 and 8,000 people. The Smithsonian Magazine selected it as one of the 28 places to see before you die by Smithsonian Magazine and this historic site brings in hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Other mentions: The Great Pyramid of Giza - Egypt

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the last surviving wonder of the Ancient World. Estimated to have been built sometime between 2540 B.C.and 2560 B.C. this structure has survived incredible harsh climates of the Western Desert. The pyramids were built to house and honor the pharaohs after death. The tombs held a multitude of precious artifacts such as gold and silver but it has been said that curses and traps awaited any who would attempt to steal from the pharaohs.

Every single one of these entries are definitely places worth visiting in a lifetime. They are some of the most visited places for a reason! The Wonders of the World: Part 1

Visiting the Wonders of the World is both beneficial for experienced travelers who may be looking for inspiration on where to go and individuals who are new to traveling and don’t know where to start. Most people have heard of the Wonders of the World, but not many actually know what they are or where! They originally consisted of the “Seven Wonders of the World” but all of them but one have since been destroyed! They consisted of: the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia (Greece), the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The only last surviving wonder from this list is the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. In 2007 a Swiss company called the New 7 Wonders Foundation, hosted a contest where 7 new wonders were chosen as the Wonders of the World.  If you are looking to add to your bucket list or are starting one from scratch, these locations below are an absolute must to add!

Great Wall of China

It comes to no surprise that the Great Wall of China would be among this list. Taking over 200 years to build and spanning across a distance of 13,171 miles (21,196 kilometers) this colossal feat of craftsmanship has become world known for its greatness. This structure spans across 9 different provinces and municipalities! The most famous part of the Great Wall (Badaling) has been visited by over three-hundred heads of state and VIPs from around the world! Though it is thousands of miles long, there are some parts of the wall that have withstood time better than others, making them more recommended for visiting. The best areas are near Beijing: Mutianyu, Jinshanling, Jiankou, Simatai, and Huanghuacheng.

Christ the Redeemer Statue (Rio de Janeiro)

Christ the Redeemer is a statue sitting atop the Corcovado mountain and overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It is the tallest art deco statue in the world with a height of 30 metres and a surprising 28 metre arm width. Nearly two million people visit the statue each year with tourism sky-rocketing around Easter.

Machu Picchu (Peru)

Sitting thousands of feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains lies Machu Picchu, a symbol of the Incan Empire. Most cities built by the Inca civilization were destroyed by invaders, but Machu Picchu was so high up in the mountains that it remained hidden from the ground and thus was safely protected.

Chichen Itza (Yucatan, Mexico)

Chichen Itza is a Mayan archaeological site in Yucatan (Mexico). When people think of Chichen Itza they usually think of the large Kukulkan Pyramid which is the most famous and most visited structure in this area, but Chichen Itza is actually a small city that exhibits a multitude of architectural styles and smaller temples as well.Chichen Itza is the most visited archaeological site in Mexico.
